The Chimney service trade is not regulated, which means in many states it is legal for any non-licensed person to claim he is a chimney sweep. Opening a company requires little capital investment, which means that virtually any person with or without experience can open a chimney business. Many companies will try to give customers a false sense of security by stating they are “Licensed and Insured”, this does not mean they are educated or qualified to do the work. It just means that they paid their fee to consumer affairs to legally do business. As a result, many ill-equipped, ill-prepared companies are free to offer their unlicensed and untrained services to the community. Sadly, as a result these companies may take advantage of the trusting homeowners by giving them a false sense of security.
