Even the most well built chimneys require maintenance. Bricks and mortar are constantly exposed to the elements and with out regular waterproofing are susceptible to damage. Bricks and mortar are both porous materials that absorb water when exposed to it. Over time, the freeze/thaw process causes bricks to spall and mortar joints crack. Once this problem has occurred the only way to fix it, without rebuilding the whole chimney, is tuck pointing/repointing. Tuckpointing is done by grinding out the existing damaged mortar joints to a consistent depth, then “tucking” new mortar in to those cracks. This process is also called, pointing and repointing . Dunrite Chimney and Stove will repoint your chimney and match your old mortar to make sure the repairs are completely un-noticeable, we can also waterproof your chimney to keep it from happening again. Bear in mind the waterproof should be redone regularly to maintain a perfect chimney.
